Product Description
Earthy Authenticity: Transform Your Home with Melbourne Slate
If you are looking to bring the raw, organic beauty of the outdoors into your living space, Art Select Melbourne Slate by Karndean is the ultimate architectural foundation. This premium 3mm thick LVT is a masterclass in realistic design, capturing the rich, multi-tonal depth of natural stone with a stunning earthy colour slate tile effect. Featuring a mix of ochre, charcoal, and rust-coloured undertones, Melbourne Slate provides a grounded, sophisticated aesthetic that suits both traditional country cottages and modern industrial apartments. At Floorstore Direct, we know that Irish homeowners value heritage looks with a modern twist, and this floor delivers exactly that.
The Art Select Advantage: Bespoke Design Freedom
The Art Select collection is widely regarded as the pinnacle of Karndean flooring, specifically engineered to replicate natural materials with breathtaking accuracy. Because Art Select Melbourne Slate is a permanent glue-down LVT, it offers a level of structural stability and creative freedom that standard “click” systems simply cannot match. At Floorstore Direct, we specialise in helping our customers explore the extensive design options this range provides:
-
Custom Inlays: You can choose to install these tiles with Karndean feature strips to create a realistic “grout line” in subtle tones like sandstone or dark grey, highlighting the geometric beauty of each tile.
-
Fit in Multiple Directions: These tiles can be fitted in a variety of layouts—from a classic grid to a dynamic diagonal orientation—allowing you to manipulate the sense of light and scale in your room.
-
Bespoke Borders: Define your kitchen island or entrance hallway with decorative borders that add a tailored, professional finish to your home.
Engineered for High-Performance Irish Living
Melbourne Slate isn’t just a visual masterpiece; it is a technical powerhouse built for the realities of modern life.
-
100% Waterproof: Like all our premium Karndean products, this floor is entirely impervious to moisture, making it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and busy mudrooms.
-
Installation Standards: To achieve a flawless finish, this floor must be glued down to a subfloor that is perfectly level, smooth, and entirely free from moisture. Proper preparation ensures a quiet, solid feel underfoot.
-
Thermal Comfort: It is fully compatible with underfloor heating systems, ensuring your home stays snug and warm during those damp Irish winters.

Ask a Question
1. Does the textured "riven" surface of Melbourne Slate make it hard to clean? Not at all. While it mimics the rugged texture of real slate, the surface is non-porous and treated with Karndean’s protective K-Guard+ technology. This means dirt and spills cannot penetrate the tile, making it far easier to maintain than real stone—a simple damp mop is all you need.
2. Why is the 3mm thickness and 0.7mm wear layer significant? The 3mm gauge represents Karndean’s most robust construction. The heavy-duty 0.7mm wear layer provides superior protection against scuffs, stains, and indentations, making it the ideal choice for high-traffic family homes and even commercial environments.
3. Why must this floor be glued down rather than installed as a click floor? A glue-down installation creates a permanent, monolithic bond with the subfloor. This eliminates the "hollow" sound sometimes associated with floating floors, provides better thermal conductivity for underfloor heating, and allows for much more intricate design layouts using borders and strips.
Recommend Adhesive
LVT can shrink, expand, or lift under pressure if not properly bonded. Uzin KE66 is the adhesive we recommend as it is a fibre reinforced adhesive, which means it holds the tile firmly in place, preventing movement even in high-traffic areas or when exposed to temperature fluctuations. Please note all subfloors must be 100% clean, dry and level before LVT installation. Check out our adhesives, levelling compounds and primers here.
Fitting Guidelines
In order for your new floor to perform to the best of its ability we advise using a skilled, professional fitter for the installation of your new floor. Prior to installation your floor must be checked to ensure it is level and free from moisture. Should there be any issues with this our levelling compounds and damp proof membranes are available here. It is vitally important, in particular with a floating floor that you do not fit any heavy objects (Such as fitted kitchens or islands) directly to the floor. An installation gap of 10-12mm must also be left around all 4 sides of the room including at doorways. Please refer to manufacturers guidelines for full installation instructions.
Cleaning & Maintenance Guide
The cleaning and maintenance of our Karndean Design Flooring is pretty much the same as with most Flooring. A sweep of a brush is all it should take to remove light dirt from your floor. For mopping, it is important you use a damp mop rather than a wet mop. If your floor is too wet, over time it may cause issues from water penetrating the joints. We advise the use of a PH neutral floor cleaner to ensure no damage to the floor. Also a spin mop or micro fibre mop should ensure the floor is not being overly wet.
