Product Description
Dramatic Textures: Define Your Space with Art Select Canberra Slate
If you are looking to capture the raw, rugged beauty of natural stone while enjoying the warmth and resilience of modern technology, Art Select Canberra Slate by Karndean is the ultimate choice. This premium 3mm thick LVT masterfully replicates the deep, charcoal tones and intricate “riven” surface of genuine slate. Unlike real stone tiles, which can be brittle, cold, and prone to cracking, Canberra Slate provides a robust black slate tile effect that feels incredibly comfortable underfoot. It is the perfect foundation for those looking to bring a touch of earthy, high-end drama to their Irish home.
The Art Select Advantage: Bespoke Design Freedom
The Art Select collection is widely regarded as the pinnacle of Karndean flooring, designed to replicate natural materials with staggering accuracy. Because Canberra Slate is a permanent glue-down LVT, it offers a level of structural stability and creative versatility that standard “click” or Camaro systems simply cannot match. At Floorstore Direct, we specialise in helping our customers explore the extensive design options this range provides:
-
Custom Inlays: You can choose to install these tiles with Karndean feature strips to create a realistic “grout line” in contrasting light grey or silver, or lay them edge-to-edge for a sleek, monolithic look.
-
Versatile Orientations: These tiles can be fitted in multiple directions—from a formal grid to a dynamic diagonal layout—allowing you to manipulate the sense of scale in your room.
-
Professional Borders: Define your kitchen island or entrance hallway with decorative borders that add a tailored, handcrafted finish to your installation.
Engineered for High-Performance Irish Living
Canberra Slate isn’t just a visual masterpiece; it is a technical powerhouse built for the realities of modern life.
-
100% Waterproof: This floor is entirely impervious to moisture, making it the premier choice for bathrooms, wet rooms, and busy kitchens where real slate would require constant sealing.
-
Installation Excellence: For a lifelong result, this floor must be adhered to a subfloor that is perfectly level, smooth, and entirely free from moisture before the adhesive is applied.
-
Thermal Efficiency: It is fully compatible with underfloor heating systems (up to 27°C), ensuring your home stays snug and warm during those damp Irish winters.

Ask a Question
1. Does the riven texture of Canberra Slate make it harder to clean? Not at all. While the floor mimics the authentic texture of real slate, the surface is non-porous and treated with K-Guard+ technology. This means dirt cannot penetrate the surface. A simple sweep and a damp mop are all you need to keep the deep charcoal tones looking pristine.
2. Why is the 3mm thickness and 0.7mm wear layer significant? The 3mm gauge represents Karndean’s most robust construction. The heavy-duty 0.7mm wear layer provides superior protection against scuffs and indentations, making it far more durable than standard 2mm LVT products—perfect for high-traffic hallways and active family homes.
3. Why must this floor be glued down rather than installed as a click system? A glue-down installation creates a permanent bond with the subfloor. This eliminates the "hollow" sound sometimes associated with floating floors, provides better heat transfer for underfloor heating, and allows for much more intricate design layouts using borders and feature strips.
Recommend Adhesive
LVT can shrink, expand, or lift under pressure if not properly bonded. Uzin KE66 is the adhesive we recommend as it is a fibre reinforced adhesive, which means it holds the tile firmly in place, preventing movement even in high-traffic areas or when exposed to temperature fluctuations. Please note all subfloors must be 100% clean, dry and level before LVT installation. Check out our adhesives, levelling compounds and primers here.
Fitting Guidelines
In order for your new floor to perform to the best of its ability we advise using a skilled, professional fitter for the installation of your new floor. Prior to installation your floor must be checked to ensure it is level and free from moisture. Should there be any issues with this our levelling compounds and damp proof membranes are available here. It is vitally important, in particular with a floating floor that you do not fit any heavy objects (Such as fitted kitchens or islands) directly to the floor. An installation gap of 10-12mm must also be left around all 4 sides of the room including at doorways. Please refer to manufacturers guidelines for full installation instructions.
Cleaning & Maintenance Guide
The cleaning and maintenance of our Karndean Design Flooring is pretty much the same as with most Flooring. A sweep of a brush is all it should take to remove light dirt from your floor. For mopping, it is important you use a damp mop rather than a wet mop. If your floor is too wet, over time it may cause issues from water penetrating the joints. We advise the use of a PH neutral floor cleaner to ensure no damage to the floor. Also a spin mop or micro fibre mop should ensure the floor is not being overly wet.
